E-motional Gaming - Creating Emotion in Games

Join us as we explore the issues around increasing the emotional sensitivity of digital entertainment.

Date: 13.45-17:30, Wednesday 4th June 2008
Venue: Kaetsu Centre, New Hall, Cambridge, CB3 0DF

Digital media is generally criticised for failing to deliver the depth of emotion provided by film and TV. The means by which Directors manipulate audience emotional reaction extends from the plot and the actors and is facilitated by environment, lighting and musical subtlety.

We have four speakers on this fascinating topic:

The Panel

  • Larry Sider from the influential ‘School of Sound’ will talk about how sound can impart emotion.
  • Chris Doran, founder of Geomerics, will present the company’s advanced lighting technologies.
  • Tameem Antoniades, Chief Designer of ‘Heavenly Sword’, will speak about the emotional sensitivity of digital entertainment: “There is no reason why we can’t turn games into a truly dramatic medium. We have the technology, we have the artistry. It is going to happen.”
  • David Heinemann from the British Film Institute will be talking about manipulating emotion in film: what games can learn from a hundred years of audience feedback.
